In this 2.5 hour webinar a bio-psycho-social model for the assessment and management of chronic low back pain disorders will be presented. Within this model, a management approach called ‘cognitive functional therapy’ for pain disorders will be outlined. This approach represents an integrated cognitive, movement, lifestyle, and behavioral approach to managing these complex disorders.

This seminar draws together current knowledge from Peter O’Sullivan’s ongoing clinical work and collaborative groundbreaking research around the world (Australia, Belgium, Norway, Denmark, Finland, and Ireland) investigating the management of persistent pain disorders. The workshop is dynamic, interactive, and practical. It includes patient demonstrations, clinical reasoning and equips physiotherapists to develop skills in communication, diagnostics as well as the design of CFT interventions for specific disorders.

Speaker: Kjartan Vibe Fersum

Kjartan Vibe Fersum is a Specialist Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist and a researcher. He is currently combining work in a private clinic in Bergen, Norway 3 days a week, in addition to working 50% as an associate professor at the University of Bergen.

He was the lead investigator of the first randomized controlled trial on CFT to test the efficacy of this intervention compared to manual therapy and exercises for long-lasting low back pain, published in The European Journal of Pain in 2013. He is also part of an international collaboration group behind the pain-ed website (www.pain-ed.com) that aims to translate the latest research regarding cognitive functional therapy, informing both the public and other health care professionals.

His research interest lies in the diagnosis and management of musculoskeletal pain disorders and the title of his Ph.D. thesis was “Classification and targeted treatment of patients with Non-Specific Chronic Low Back Pain” where Cognitive Functional Therapy (CFT) was the core work of the thesis.

He is currently one of the principal investigators for another randomized controlled trial (FaKTa project) to test CFT compared to neuroscience education and exercise among patients with long-lasting back pain in elderly care (nursing homes and home care).

Goals:

  • Overview of the back pain diagnosis, the evidence and management dilemma
  • Potential multidimensional underlying mechanisms to pain
  • Overview of the clinical reasoning framework of low back pain disorders
  • Develop the communication skills acquired to deal with complex pain problems

I am happy to attend this course CFT, I would like to have a video representation of the course in future for better understanding. Making sense of pain and controlling patients movement helps to improve quality of life by reducing pain and disability. i would like to attend more on this topic. Thanks for giving this opportunity…… Physiotutors doing their job awesome….

  6. An integrated approach to low back pain

    5

Interesting and practical webinar where the clinical therapist will be exposed to a systematic approach of the many aspects of low back pain and is introduced to a strategy of treatment that is strong and evidently based on a lot of research and expertise.

  7. Not so happy with this Webinar

I didn’t really like this particular webinar, I didn’t find something new to learn or to take with me for my work!

    leerzaam!

  9. Go for it

    4

Really interesting to look at all the factors that influence a patient’s back pain experience and to see what could be done to change that.
If you are not familliar with the bio/psycho/social model you defenitely need to look at that webinar.
Just bear in mind that the presentation is more focus on making us think more while we are helping patients recovering but not giving us ready to use recipes..

  10. Great Webinar

    5

the webinar is a wonderful summary of the promising approach of CFT which has revolutionized my understanding of chronic back pain. the content of the webinar is informative, instructive and entertaining and pleasantly presented. in addition, Mr. Fersum succeeds in summarizing the topic very succinctly in the 2.5 hours. The webinar is an excellent way of gaining an overview of the topic, especially if you are a beginner.

  11. Cognitive functional therapy: making sense of low back pain - webinar

    4

As a physiotherapist just entering the field, this course taught me a great deal about how to approach low back pain holistically. First, Mr. Fersum explains the main factors that influence (the onset of) low back pain. After this, he goes on to explain what cognitive functional therapy is. He uses two case studies to do this.
Not everything he tells, I heard for the first time, but this explanation was necessary to see the broad picture.
I will definitely take the information from this course when treating my patients. Very informative!
